WHAT WILL I BE DOING IN THIS CLASS?

The obvious answer to that question is reading!  We will definitely be reading and reading and reading!  We will also be learning some reading strategies and taking critical looks at what we read.  Can we apply the lessons learned in the reading to our own lives?  Do the authors promote Christian principles and values?

Specifically, we will be doing the following:

examining the elements of short stories

learning strategies that help us become better reader

expanding our vocabulary

reading several different literary genre

reading for pleasure

going to the library to choose books

book projects

writing as we respond to what we read

A study of short stories will be the emphasis during the first quarter.  Novels will be read as a class for the following three quarters.  Novels studied will be taken from the following list:

The Light in the Forest by Conrad Richter

Nothing But the Truth by Avi

Banner in the Sky by James Ramsey Ullman

The Pearl by John Steinbeck

The Miracle Worker by William Gibson

Across Five Aprils by Irene Hunt

A book project is due every quarter.  These projects are based on novels that you will read independently.

Reading is to the mind what exercise is to the body.
