EXPECTATIONS
FOR INCOMING KINDERGARTENERS
Each child entering kindergarten should:
- be able to take care of own bathroom
need,
- be able to separate from mother
(parents),
- be starting to take care of
belongings: hang up coat, backpack, etc.,
- respect teachers, adults, and other
children,
- be learning to listen and follow
directions,
- have an attention span of 15 minutes,
- be starting to learn that God is our
heavenly Father, that Jesus, His Son, is our best friend
and Savior, and that the Bible is God's Word,
- display an interest in the world
around him: plants, animals, sun, moon, stars, etc.,
- definitely show signs of developing
self-control: should be able to control temper,
- be able to pick up and hold a pencil
and crayon,
- be starting to cut with scissors,
- enjoy coloring and experimenting with
various art materials,
- enjoy looking and books and listening
to stories,
- be able to recognize own name and
should be trying to print first name,
- show an interest in numbers and
counting,
- show developmentally appropriate
speech sounds that should be mastered by age 5,
- know 90% of alphabet and beginning sounds
- enjoy activities involving large
muscles: running, jumping, climbing, skipping, hopping, etc.
