Dear Student,

Greetings from your fourth grade teacher!  I hope you are having a fun and relaxing summer.  I’ll be anxious to hear all about your summer activities when you come back to school at the end of August.

Exciting things will be happening in our class this year.  We’ll be reading interesting stories, “travelling” to some interesting places (in and out of this world!), “meeting” some interesting people, and having fun with numbers.  Learning more about Jesus and singing His praises will be an important part of our day, too.

Even though you may not be quite ready to be back in school yet, you may want to start gathering together the supplies you will need this year in fourth grade.  Please remember to label everything with your name.  We’ll be using the supplies right away so please bring them all with you on the first day of school.  Here’s the list:

bullet a loose-leaf binder (one with a wide binding)
bullet white wide-ruled paper (not college-ruled)
bullet 6 subject dividers with pockets (labeled Reading, Math, Spelling, Language, Social Studies, Science)
bullet a sturdy pocket folder to keep papers neat traveling to and from school (Plastic ones work really well.)
bullet a marbled composition book
bullet a large bottle of white glue
bullet a glue stick
bullet 5-10 sharpened pencils with erasers
bullet a pink eraser (This kind really erases the cleanest.)
bullet a box of crayons (at least a 24-pack)
bullet a box of sharpened colored pencils (at least a 24-pack)
bullet a small plastic pencil box no larger than 8x5x3 (BIGGER BOXES DO NOT FIT IN DESKS) or a large binder pouch to keep supplies in
bullet a 12-in. wooden ruler with a metric scale, too (The kind with holes fits nicely into a binder and is easy to locate.)
bullet sharp school scissors (such as Fiskars)
bullet small pencil sharpener (must have a shaving catcher)
bullet a Bible (The New Adventure Bible (or any NIV version is strongly recommended since it’s the one used in our Religion book)
bullet 3 picture postcards showing a scene from Maryland (I’ve seen these in some greeting card stores.)
bullet a flash drive (at least 1 gb) for saving work from technology class
bullet 1 LARGE container of disinfecting wipes
bullet I will provide a homework pad for everyone this year.
bullet Hardcover books will need to be covered.  You may wish to buy covers, although paper bag covers are excellent, too (and the best choice for your Math book).  The “sticky” type of cover is not as easy to remove as they say it is.  This type is not allowed to be used.  Several of our textbooks are large and the regular size fabric covers do not fit well on them.  Please buy LARGE fabric covers. Book covers may have to be replaced  during the year.
bullet You may bring markers in, if you wish (you are not required to), but if you do, please make sure that they are washable ones.
bullet Extra supplies such as sharpened pencils, notebook paper, colored pencils, scissors, and a ruler should be available at home also.

Enjoy the rest of the summer!  I’m looking forward to seeing you at the end of August.

                                                In His service,

                                                Thelma Novak

P.S.  Parents, please be sure to read the Parent/Student Handbook enclosed in this mailing.  It contains many new (and improved!) policies.
